Hastings Nebraska Municipal Government

The city of Hastings Nebraska is governed under an Administrator-Mayor Council system. The position of Administrator was initiated the summer of 1978. Hastings is the county seat for Adams County and is governed by the Adams County Board of Supervisors.

Law Enforcement

The Hastings Police Department has 39 officers using 8 unmarked cars, 2 motorcycles, and 9 bicycles. They utilize one police dog. The Hastings Police Department is a full service agency operating under the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. The Adams County Sheriff's department has a staff of 19 and uses 17 cars. They provide jail capacity for 40 inmates and have enforcement responsibilities of 600 square miles. The State Patrol headquarters office is in Grand Island, 25 miles to the north, but operates a State Patrol contingent out of the Hastings Police Department.

Fire Protection

The Hastings Fire Department includes 28 full time and 32 reserves including the Fire Chief. All of the full time staff are certified Emergency Medical Technicians. There are two fire station locations. The City's equipment includes three engines, one ladder truck, one Rescue truck, one Hazmat vehicle and two trailers, one command vehicle, and three staff cars. The department has two thermo-imaging cameras. The Hazmat vehicle and two trailers have an array of hazardous materials leak and patch equipment - protective encapsulated suits, cascade air and oxygen and other heavy rescue gear. The City Fire Department has a contract with the Hastings Rural Fire District to house some of its equipment and to provide a certain number of staff on alarms into the 155 square miles of Hastings Rural District. Fire insurance classification within the city limits was upgraded in June 1994 to class three. The rural classification ranges from seven to ten depending upon the location of the property within the Fire District.
